Four national languages, several search markets
Switzerland has four national languages: German, French, Italian and Romansh. According to the Federal Statistical Office, roughly six in ten residents name German as a main language, about a quarter French and around eight percent Italian (multiple answers are possible). English is a main language for a growing minority, especially in the cities.
| Region | Language | Main cities |
|---|---|---|
| German-speaking Switzerland | German (written Standard German, spoken Swiss German) | Zurich, Basel, Bern, Lucerne, St. Gallen, Zug |
| French-speaking Switzerland (Romandie) | French | Geneva, Lausanne, Neuchâtel, Fribourg |
| Italian-speaking Switzerland | Italian | Lugano, Bellinzona, Locarno |
| Parts of Graubünden | Romansh | Chur region, Engadin |
For SEO this means: each region is its own search market. People in Lausanne search in French and see French results. That is why the Swiss search market needs separate, locally written pages per language.
Google dominates the Swiss search market
Google handles the large majority of searches in Switzerland – roughly nine in ten according to common market-share statistics. Bing plays a smaller role, mostly on Windows devices. AI assistants such as ChatGPT and Google's AI Overviews are becoming a new entry point, so clear, citable facts on your pages matter more every year.
Swiss German is spoken, Standard German is written
People speak Swiss German dialects, but they almost always search and write in Standard German – with Swiss spelling. The most visible difference: Switzerland does not use «ß», it writes «ss» («Strasse», not «Straße»). There are also Swiss words such as «Velo» (bicycle), «Natel» (mobile phone, now dated), «Billett» (ticket) or «Offerte» (quote). Keyword research must use Swiss data, not German data.
Strong local players in the results
- Directories: local.ch and search.ch are widely used for local businesses.
- Marketplaces and comparison sites: Digitec Galaxus, Ricardo, Tutti, Comparis and homegate.ch take many top positions in their categories.
- Google Maps: for local searches, the map results often decide who gets the call.
International companies often compete with these platforms. A good plan shows where you can win directly and where it is smarter to be listed on the platform.
